A designation for easy identification of craft spirits elaborated using only raw materials from Québec.

Description

In January 2020, the Association des distilleries artisanales du Québec (ADAQ) and the Association des microdistilleries du Québec (AMDQ), which subsequently merged to form the Union québécoise des microdistilleries (UQMD), filed an application to reserve the Spiritueux 100 % Québec PGI. This protected geographical indication was requested to protect the authenticity of craft spirits made from Québec raw materials and distilled in the province. All the specific stages of elaboration are to be completed in the delimited geographical area using the know-how of Québec distillers.

Demand for these products has undergone exceptional growth in recent years. There are approximately 90 holders of permits to manufacture spirits in Québec. The number and diversity of these spirits – including gin, vodka, whiskey and liqueurs – are growing strongly,

The project is being analyzed by an expert committee made up of specialists selected for their expertise who represent the complete value chain for these products.

Timeline

  • On January 28, 2020, the Conseil des Appellations Réservées et des Termes Valorisants received an application for recognition of the Spiritueux 100 % Québec PGI for examination.

  • The expert committee conducted a preliminary assessment of the file on March 12, 2020.

  • The expert committee continued his assessment of the file on June 19, 2020.

  • On February 4, 2021, the Conseil des Appellations Réservées et des Termes Valorisants presented the current state of the project to the Union québécoise des microdistilleries (UQMD) with the expert committee.
