In January 2020, the Association des distilleries artisanales du Québec (ADAQ) and the Association des microdistilleries du Québec (AMDQ), which subsequently merged to form the Union québécoise des microdistilleries (UQMD), filed an application to reserve the Spiritueux 100 % Québec PGI. This protected geographical indication was requested to protect the authenticity of craft spirits made from Québec raw materials and distilled in the province. All the specific stages of elaboration are to be completed in the delimited geographical area using the know-how of Québec distillers.
Demand for these products has undergone exceptional growth in recent years. There are approximately 90 holders of permits to manufacture spirits in Québec. The number and diversity of these spirits – including gin, vodka, whiskey and liqueurs – are growing strongly,
The project is being analyzed by an expert committee made up of specialists selected for their expertise who represent the complete value chain for these products.
